Switches and packet technologies have allowed businesses to enjoy the speed and reliability of T1 lines, originally intended for use solely by the carriers. Many businesses in Washington DC choose to locate, or relocate their business, in a building with an existing T1 line installed (see Lit Building). By sharing the T1 line with other businesses in the building, access costs can drop dramatically, but may be offset by higher property rental costs.
